Prom cancelled forever amidst Aragon Leadership money laundering scandal

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, school was brought to a screeching halt. Even with the administration and staff’s best efforts, all senior events were eventually cancelled.

“Honestly, I don’t really get why we had to cancel everything. Why couldn’t we just do prom and graduation and stuff but like without Asian kids and everyone else injects themselves with bleach? I feel like people would’ve been happier that way,” said super senior Bill DeWall.

Although DeWall petitioned for events to continue as planned, Leadership was unresponsive. Instead, Leadership sublimated the loss of these momentous occasions that mark seniors’ passage to adulthood with alternative gifts.

“We couldn’t hold real events, so we brought the magic of those events to the seniors at home,” said junior Mimi Dumás said. “Me and some of the other seniors [in leadership] suggested alternatives that would be a more meaningful sendoff, but the final choice wasn’t really ours because we’re not the ones most impacted by those choices.”

In the past few weeks, seniors received bags with their cap and gown as well as their at home graduation items: a lawn sign (#OnceADonAlwaysADon) and a single Hershey’s chocolate bar.

“If we had a real graduation, we wouldn’t have had the chocolate bars. I think the people who are upset are just really negative. We literally got free lawn signs AND chocolate. Why would you want a graduation over that? Plus graduation is really hot. Like what if we had chocolate and a real graduation. That wouldn’t work out,” senior Lana Alabama said.

Obviously the majority of señors were upset about events and school being cancelled and wondered where the money they raised for the past four years and prom funds went.

“Oh, where has our money gone?” senior Frank Jhonas said.

Well isn’t it obvious seniors?! You got your lawn sign and chocolate, did you not? There are more than 400 seniors. The Outlook did some investigation into these funds, aka we did the math, and it all adds up #ad! Some students brought our attention to the surplus of Aragon staff that have new cars, but the prom budget of around ten thousand dollars could hardly buy multiple cars. Perhaps leased multiple cars, but that is besides the point.

In response to the backlash and “administration is cancelled” mentality, Leadership has taken drastic measures to appease the seniors. In Aragon’s spirit of unity, inclusivity and equality, the administration has announced that prom will be permanently canceled. Aragon will no longer have prom as a tribute to the class of 2020.

“Yeah, literally no one wanted that,” senior Mike Scarn said.

Scarn’s sentiment regarding the complete disposal of prom is shared among the other seniors. 0% of seniors were consulted about this decision and 97% of seniors say they strongly disagree. The remaining 3% say they moderately disagree with the decision.

“I think this is a really wonderful demonstration of empathy for this year’s seniors,” said Aragon parent Hillda Borrosmon. “Our high-achieving students deserve at least this much.”

Again, no seniors were consulted for or informed of this decision.

“We suggested allocating our remaining prom funds to next year’s classes to ensure they get the experiences we didn’t have, but apparently those funds went into the grad packages. We made some other suggestions and none of them were about cancelling prom forever,” said Alabama.

The administration ultimately made the decision they believed would best accommodate the needs of all Aragon students and honor the seniors. With their years of experience, consulting the students was unnecessary, seeing as the administration has seen hundreds of students through their four years at Aragon and has dealt with a multitude of situations, including plenty of incidents similar to the current times.

“When discussing our options, my colleagues and I put ourselves in parents’ shoes. And we decided, to quote ‘Tangled,’ ‘Mother knows best.’ Yes, the mother in that movie was horrifically abusive and selfish and disregarded all of her child’s wishes, but that is besides the point,” said Admin Miranda Pankow. “We came to the conclusion that traditions would not mean as much to students due to current circumstances. We’re sure current and future students will understand and come to embrace the decisions we’ve made.”
